Kalahari Red Bucks
In the early 1970s, breeders in South Africa and Namibia began selectively identifying red-colored goats from the local indigenous herds. Through natural selection, only the hardiest and most well-adapted goats survived, while the less resilient ones were entirely eliminated.
The goal was to develop a robust, highly adaptable meat goat capable of thriving in the harsh African landscape while achieving high birth and survival rates, alongside a profitable meat yield. Special attention was given to enhancing maternal traits and adaptability. This effort resulted in the creation of the Kalahari Reds, aptly named after the striking red sands of the Kalahari Desert.
The rich red-brown coloration of Kalahari Reds makes them particularly valuable in crossbreeding programs, as they effectively enhance the color and overall quality of indigenous goat breeds.
